Champion of Alaskan Huskies, Joe Redington, Sr. Father of the Iditarod by Katie Mangelsdorf is available and a highly recommended read for any teacher who is using Iditarod with students!
Katie is also available to help you and your students learn more about Joe and the Iditarod. Here is a message from Katie:
I have been going into the schools in the Mat-Su Valley and in the Anchorage School District and speaking to 3th – 8th grade students. I have been talking about the writing process for Joe’s story coupled with the qualities Joe lived, which allowed him to do what he did, and how everyone can tap into these same qualities and use them to accomplish the things each one of needs to do. I have been talking about how each and everyone of us is a thinker and when we have a good idea and believe in ourselves, wonderful things can happen in our lives. I have been so impressed with the children’s responses and comments about the qualities Joe lived in just the few short excerpts that I read to them from the story. Sure is fun!
I f you come across teachers who have questions about Joe’s story or would like to have their students get involved with the writing process, please be sure to mention that I would be happy to answer any questions they may have or answer any questions their students may have.
